Story

Thanks for taking the time to visit our JustGiving page.

Although none of us have a head for heights, we have now overcome that and successfully completed the 'Friends' 150FT Abseil Challenge at the Europa Hotel, Belfast, on 8th  May 2010 to raise some vital funds for the Cancer Centre at Belfast City Hospital.

About 'Friends'

In 1984 Friends of Montgomery House based at became a registered charity.  The name originated from Montgomery House, the original name given to the hospital in 1953.

The late Dr Gerard Lynch who was Senior Oncologist at started the charity along with members of the Cancer Scanner Appeal which had been set up in 1979 to purchase a CT Scanner for the hospital.

Dr Lynch’s wife Christine became the face of the charity and over the next 2 decades helped raise over £5 million for cancer patients and their families.  In 2006 Mrs Lynch became the Honorary President of the newly named charity “Friends of the Cancer Centre”

Some of the major projects that the charity has funded over the last 2 decades include a £1.2million MRI Scanner, which brought waiting lists down form two months to one week; Glenview the patient hotel; a £450,000 state-of-the-art simulator, the Gerard Lynch Support Centre and the hospital church. The charity also funded many thousands of other essential items of equipment, patient comforts and research posts.

‘Friends’ fund research within the Cancer Centre and as a result patients benefit from major advances in technology, which has improved and advanced patient treatment and care.

‘Friends’ fund medical equipment to provide cutting edge technology to help with diagnosis and treatment of patients.

‘Friends’ fund patient comforts to improve the quality of life for patients and their families.
