Story
This year I will be the first person to attempt to swim from the Principality of Sealand to the East Coast of England.
The Principality of Sealand is a micro-nation 12 kilometres (7.5 miles) off the coast of Suffolk. Originally known as 'Roughs Tower', it was a World War Two sea fort which was decomissioned, occupied and declared a sovereign state in 1967, due to it lying in international waters outside of the UK's 6km territorial limits. Since 1975 it has had its own constitution, national anthem, national flag, currency and passport.
To date, nobody has ever attempted to either swim to or from it. On August 20th 2018, I aim to be the first person to do so.
The swim will be overseen and recognised by the British Long Distance Swimming Association (BLDSA).
I will be accompanied by a support boat and team, which will take me to Sealand, and I will swim back to shore, aiming to land in Felixstowe. The boat, pilot and all other costs have been paid for by myself and the crew are all volunteers made up of fellow swimming friends.
One of these volunteers, Paul Parrish, who was our team leader when I completed the English Channel Relay in 2016 (and with whom I had the first conversation about this swim at the time!) is the Director of Fundraising for Aspire. Although he is giving his time for free, and I'm doing this swim as a personal ambition rather than to fundraise, if people should wish to contribute and show their thanks, they can do so via this page for Aspire.
