Story
Malcolm, an ardent cyclist, used to do
fundraising rides of 50 miles plus (no mean feat for a man of his years) every
year until he lost his short battle with cancer earlier this year
He was much-loved in his community, always
having time for a kind word towards others or a word of encouragement to a
fellow cyclist struggling up a col!
Malcolm supported us on our annual
cycling-pilgrimages through Spain and the UK, taking care of us and the logistics.
In memory of our dear friend, five of us, Chris
Jones, Andrew Marsh, Tony King, Steve Graham and I will tackle the roads
leading from the infamous smuggling caves in Botany Bay, Kent to Lands End – a 455 mile
journey that we plan to finish in 4 days and 1 hour...give or take, then we are off for lunch!!!
Riding through Devon and Cornwall will see us
pant up many a hill (where I'm sure we'll all still hear Malcolm's customary
white lie "Go hard, the summit is just around the next bend"
when the going gets tough) and the catching of breaths on the downhill.
We can't wait!
Our ride is, however, not just about
remembering, but also about helping to continue Malcolm's philanthropy. We hope to raise funds for Mount Edgecumbe Hospice in St Austell – an institution that Malcolm supported through his life, and would be proud of us for continuing to do so.
