Story

On Saturday 18th November 2017 at the Vale Hotel, Hensol. Gareth Owens of South Wales Police in association with Llantwit Major Boxing Club, will host the 10th anniversary of the South Wales Police white collar boxing event. This event has had anormous success raising money for charity over the years.

I will be competing for a third and probably final time.

This event has been run annually for 10 years and has raised thousands of pounds for charities including Ty Hafan, The Welsh Guards Afghan Appeal, Y Bont and many more. Last year the event raised over £18,000 for all the involved charities

The boxers either are South Wales police employees or members of partner agencies we work with.

The boxers involved all have little experience and many are complete novices however for charity they compete in 3 two minute rounds of boxing in front of up to 400 friends and colleges.

All boxers give up there time and train for months in advance with the help of Llantwit Major boxing club who provide coaching throughout the build up and during the event itself free of charge.

The commitment of the boxers and coaches ensures the bouts are competitive and of a high quality.

The event will consist of up to 10 fights, a charity auction and raffle.

Despite the scale of the event and the commitment shown by so many, the amount raised for charity every year is hindered by the costs of putting on such an enjoyable and affordable night for the paying guests (venue, food, disco etc.).

For this reason all boxers have been asked to set up a just giving page to raise money for a charity of their choosing. This increases the amount that can be raised and given to these deserving charities.

This year I have decided to raise money for Diabetes UK. As some of you may know I lost my Grandmother this year, she was probably my biggest fan. She suffered with type 1 diabetes for most of her life & I've experienced first hand the struggles the condition can have on someone. So this year, I'm doing it for you Grandma Joyce.
