Story

20 years ago, the world changed. One of the most horrifying terror attacks of our time took place across America.

2753 people were killed when hijacked American Airlines Flight 11 and United Airlines Flight 175 were intentionally crashed into the north and south towers of the World Trade Centre in New York or as a result of the crashes.

Of those who perished during the initial attacks and the subsequent collapses of the towers, 343 were New York City firefighters, 23 were New York City police officers and 37 were officers at the Port Authority.

This year on the 20th anniversary of the attacks, Avon Fire and Rescue Service will be honouring those who lost their lives on that fateful day.

Our aim is to climb 110 floors in full firefighting kit and BA sets, much the same as the 343 NYFD firefighters set out to do 20 years ago. Tragically their lives were lost in the attempt to further save lives and prevent fire spread.

Our event is taking place at Ashton Gate Stadium, where we are using a dedicated stairwell over 4 floors. We will have to walk this staircase 28 times over in the time allowed, which is 102 minutes. This is the total time that the terror attacks took place from the first plane hitting the first tower, through until the last tower collapsed.

The extra weight of the kit combined with a BA set is approximately 25kg, and each firefighter will be attempting to complete this challenge carrying this kit on them.

All money raised will be supporting The Firefighters Charity, who are at the forefront of assisting and improving UK firefighters Mental, Physical and Social well being.
