Story
Firstly, Thankyou for taking the time to visit the page. You’ve given into my consistent sharing. Secondly why am I here, what am I doing...and more important what can YOU do to help?
Let me fill you in, in September 2013 I was diagnosed with a rare aggressive form of Leukaemia (AML). I went through 6 months of intensive chemo at the age of 14 and was soon discharged back into the world to ‘be normal again’ this worked for about 12 months before I sadly relapsed with the illness and found myself in hospital once again. Me and my family had only one path to head down, and that was a Bone Marrow Transplant. I was very lucky to find a donor on the Anthony Nolan register, so there’s your link for the charity that ultimately is responsible for me still being here today. As annoying as I am, I thank them with all my heart for what they did.
Now, why 264 miles? I received my transplant at the Royal Marsden Hospital in Surrey, on the teenage cancer trust ward. That Hospital is approx. 264 miles from my front door in a round trip. Now, obviously, due to the current climate I’m unable to safely cross county boarders in travel. So what’s better than completing this mileage around the sunny county of Dorset, On a bike...
For those who don’t know, I’m fairly new to cycling, I’ve planned routes and some friends will be getting involved as well. I’ll be updating you all very often on my journey.
But the most important thing here is Anthony Nolan, a charity that I fear we don’t spread enough awareness for, and don’t know enough about until we have too. For example did you know that there are 2,000 people on average in need of a stem cell transplant across the UK. Shockingly only 2% of the UK population is on the register, compared to 13% of Cyprus and 9% of Germany? On average only 69% of patients are able to find a match because of how low the register is. Without YOU there is no cure. Your donations contribute to, specialised nurses, donors, and saving families from being torn apart. Please give anything you can. It all helps MASSIVELY.
