Every year we do a little charity fundraising as part of our longer walks. We have asked people for help in raising money for a range of charities very lose to our hearts over the years and people have been astonishingly generous and supportive.
Last year we took Mrs Oram's best china out for an exciting long distance tea party and we are going to do it again this year.
Mrs Oram (my mother!) was diagnosed with Crohn's disease back in the mid 1980s, at a time when little seemed to be known about it and for which there were no real treatments. She was desperately ill after suffering for a number of years before diagnosis and eventually underwent a huge operation which took her months to recover from, but which helped her regain her normal weight and allowed her to enjoy life again.
Treatments have certainly moved on from then but Crohn's, and Ulcerative Colitis, remain highly debilitating and distressing diseases which affect young people as well as those who are older and I know a number of students, friends and colleagues who have to deal with it. We lost our old friend Jeremy to it recently and so we decided to make this our chosen charity this year. Helen's moving tribute to him can be read at the end of our blog on walking the Carmarthenshire Coastal Path.
So, if you can spare us a little cash, we would be immensely grateful.
Crohn's and Colitis UK says;
We’re the UK’s leading charity for Crohn’s and Colitis.Right now, over 300,000 people in the UK are living with a lifelong disease that many people have never heard of. And the real number could be almost double that.Because of the stigma and misunderstanding surrounding these diseases, thousands of people are suffering in silence.But they’re not alone.We’re working to improve diagnosis and treatment, and to fund research into a cure; to raise awareness and to give people hope, comfort and confidence to live freer, fuller lives.
