Story
Remembering Huw.
Last year my uncle sadly passed away as a result of metastasised cancer. Huw was the Emeritus Professor of Microbial Ecology at the University of Brighton. He was highly regarded amongst his colleagues and students alike, with many of us still remembering him fondly and missing him a great deal.
Most recently Huw had been funded by the Bill and Melinda Gates foundation to research pathogen transmission in India and Kenya. His work also took him to Haiti where he developed life saving water treatment in the aftermath of the 2010 Haiti earthquake. He was an expert adviser on sanitation and safe drinking water to the World Health Organisation, Wateraid and UNICEF amongst others. His work continues to have a global impact and his legacy continues amongst the colleagues and students that he supported and inspired.
He was also a wonderful uncle. He was funny, kind, supportive and one of the people that inspired me to pursue medicine later in life by exemplifying the meaningful impact of scientific research.
Fundraising.
A memorial fund has been set up at the University of Brighton*. The "Professor Huw Taylor Memorial Fund" will be used to further research into waterborne disease and water sanitation. It will support future specialists to continue Huw's work.
On 1st July 2018 I will be running in the Leamington Spa Half Marathon to raise money for the fund. It'll be my first race since becoming a mother so I may not smash any PBs (!), but I would be very grateful for any money that can be raised for this wonderful and personal cause.
Thank you for taking the time to read this and in advance for your generosity :)
