Story
Thank you so much for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page...
With much help from Peps dear sister Nuria and son Louis, I would like to tell you why I am doing this, and why this and your help means so much to me.
Pep was diagnosed with bladder cancer back in October 2011. He had experienced pain but put it off for weeks. He put off doctors appointments due to work commitments until it became unbearable. After initial consultation Pep was diagnosed straight away. He was given chemo-therapy, and it was suggested that due to his age, it would be wise to have his bladder removed and reconstructed. A very big operation that would take place in Addenbrookes. This would involve training yourself to know when to go to the toilet.
Unfortunately half way through the operation, the surgeon explained to the family that things were more progressed than they had believed and the op had to be abandoned. Pep opted not to know why it had been cut short, in fact Pep never once wanted to know what the doctors thoughts were or how much time he had!
Following this, Pep sought a second opinion at the Royal Marsden in London and met with a professor in Urology... this man bought us time with Pep. He gave him a combination of chemotherapy and radio therapy.
2012 Christmas was special, we found out this had shrunk his tumour.. we all celebrated!!
Shortly after a trip to the USA he became ill again and was given the harrowing news it was back. He continued with more treatment, until sadly it was decided... no more could be done.
He battled every day for over 2years, if you saw him and spent time with him it was just impossible to know how poorly he was. He kept every one laughing in the darkest moments... he NEVER moaned once.
Pep was taken to Thorpe Hall when mobility became an issue, to receive specialist, palliative care. The whole family had support, you were surrounded by like minded people going through the same pain.
Thorpe Hall employs special people, people that have a vocation in empathy and special care. Volunteers help where possible, it does not feel like a hospice or hospital. The hospice need £6 million to extend the hospice, to help provide more privacy, let family members stay over, make adequate movements if someone has an infection, and to make it easier for patients to access the beautiful gardens. Our donations alone will be a needle in a hay stack, but its something to give back, and something to make this project become one step closer.
Peps condition grew worse over the weeks, the pain got bigger, but with his pain relief sorted, he chose to go home for his last week.
Pep sadly lost his life, after his huge heroic fight, on the 6th January 2014, surrounded by his loved ones.
A year has gone by. This never gets easier.
Let his story not be in vain. Please dig deep to support my skydive, every one, no matter how small is affected by cancer in one way or another. Anything will help to towards making the end of someone life the most comfortable it can be. Thorpe Hall needs our help.
I am petrified of the skydive , and along with doing this as my promise to Pep, and to support the hospice, it is also a humongous personal achievement for me, the little girl who Pep watched grow up... whom I always deeply admired and so proud of. xx
