Story
This years marks 10 years since I got that horrendous knock at the door from two police officers who told me my brother had taken his own life and since that day I’ve always wanted to do what I can to help others just like Robbie.
I just want everyone to never feel alone and to know it’s ok to talk.
In the past, I have supported various mental health charities through my running and this year I was lucky enough to be chosen to run The London Marathon. I want to use my place in this amazing event to support a charity that I believe need support now more than ever to continue the amazing work they do, helping men just like Robbie.
Robbie was literally the life and soul of the party and it wasn’t a party until he arrived. His smile was always the biggest and brightest and his laugh was infectious. He loved music and dancing at the front of the stage at every gig, singing his heart out and unleashing his best dance moves.
He was a postman, the one who typically wore his shorts through every season and always did his best to try and get rid of those dodgy tan lines.
Robbie was one of those local guys who everyone knew. He played football, he was a runner, he drank in the local pub, he was just one of those people who knew everyone and if you didn’t know him personally you knew of him.
Aside from this, Robbie was not only a brother to me and Roxanne, he was a friend to so many, a son, a husband and a dad yet he felt he couldn’t talk to anyone and he believed his only way out was to end his life and this is what breaks my heart the most and why charities like Andy’s Man Club are so important.
Andy’s Man Club are a mens suicide prevention charity and they offer free support groups throughout the UK and online.
Their aim is to end the stigma surrounding Men’s mental health and help men through the power of conversation.
The charity was established in 2016 by Elaine, Andy’s Mum and Luke, Andy’s Brother in law. Andy sadly took his own life at the young age of 23 and the aim of the charity is to provide men with a safe space where they feel comfortable to talk.
I fully appreciate that times are hard for so many with the increase in the cost of living. If anyone feels like they could spare any donations regardless of how small to help support Andy’s Man Club to continue supporting men, in what is going to be a very difficult period for so many throughout the UK I would be forever grateful.
Thank you
