Dedication

I was 16 the first time I knew I was losing someone I loved to cancer.  I remember so clearly the calls about being in remission, coming out of remission, the final birthday, the last days, the loss.  I was grateful when she was no longer suffering, but I was so angry she had to be in that pain in the first place.  Looking back, I can remember losing another loved one 10 years earlier.  I can put the pieces together to recognize that loss and what it meant.  All I knew then was that he wouldn’t be there much longer, and then he wasn’t.  I didn’t know what my good-bye meant.

The losses haven’t stopped – for my family or for others.

Last year, I had the hard task of watching as a dear friend lost his mother to cancer and knowing I couldn’t do anything to make it better for him.  I’m not a scientist or a magician, but I refuse to sit back and watch cancer destroy family after family.  You know what I can do?  I can say, “This one’s for you and your mum, Neil.”  I can say, “Saying ‘I’m sorry for your loss’ just isn’t enough.”  I can NEVER stop trying.

In case you’re wondering: No, I don’t think I’m going to cure cancer by just running a few miles, but I’m sure not going to do it sitting on my butt.  This is my dedication, and I’m dedicated to it.
