This year me and my family will be taking part in the Race For Life, we will be racing in loving memory of Barbara Harrison. Although we never quite made it officially as Mother and Daughter-In- Law. She was however a dear friend to me, and I will always be grateful that we shared such a special relationship.
Barbara, aged 54 years was diagnosed with Oesophageal Cancer (cancer of the gullet/food pipe) 13th April 2012. The cancer was caught in its late stages, so surgery was not an option. The tumour was too near the Aorta, and would have been too dangerous to operate.
Barbara underwent radiotherapy for 5 weeks at the Freeman Hospital. We had good results from this , the CT scans showed the tumour had decreased in size. Barbara then commenced her chemotherapy regime (6 treatments). Unfortunately for Barbara things did not go to plan, she only managed 3 treatments in total due to thrombocytopenia (low Bloods). A decision was made by health professionals that it was in Barbara's best interests that the chemotherapy was discontinued, as it was making her worse.
This devastating news left us with the only option of drug trials. Which were next to start in the new year.
On the 29th January 2013 9 months from diagnosis, Barbara lost her battle to this evil disease. This amazing woman never gave up hope, and fought right up until the end until there was no fight left.
Barbara was such a wonderful, caring, loving person with a big heart. She touched a lot of people's lives. She will be dearly missed by all that knew her.
