Race for Life London - Blackheath 5k 2013 · 7 July 2013 ·
Thank you for visiting my Race for Life sponsorship page. Please dig deep and sponsor me online - it's quick, easy and totally secure.
This year, I am running for Sasha, my Nan and my Uncle Rob….3 very different stories all with life changing outcomes.
Sasha would have been in her thirties now, but sadly she passed away at just 24 from a brain tumour that progressed from migraine like symptoms to killing her in less than a year. I had a cold when she was first admitted to hospital and wasn’t allowed to visit and it was such a rapid deterioration that by the time I saw her, she was unable to speak and communicating by gestures only. I was lucky enough to be able to help Sasha and her family during the months that followed and I hope I took a little bit of the pressure off her Mum who commuted 3 hours a day to be with her.
Cancer is just awful, it robs its victims of their dignity piece by piece and renders those witnessing it’s progress utterly powerless. It forces loved ones to watch the slow and painful degeneration of its victims remorselessly.
But, and this is a HUGE BUT, we are starting to make a difference, we are able to halt this vile disease in its tracks and give people back their dignity, empowering loved ones to help them through the tough medication regimes with light at the end of the tunnel. My wonderful Nan beat bowel cancer with a will of iron, a confident surgeon and the most amazing Macmillan nurses. She is now 92 and an absolute inspiration to everyone that knows her and that is thanks to the work of Cancer Research, without which Leia and Caspar would never have known her. Prostate cancer tried to slow my Uncle Rob, but again thanks to the work of Cancer Research, he was successfully treated and still here to tell the tale.
So, what can we do to help the gifted and talented scientists at Cancer Research put an end to this disease? MONEY….MONEY…and more MONEY! We can’t don a white coat and set to with a microscope and centrifuge, but we CAN sponsor someone to run around a field for half an hour and raise money to make sure that the funds are there for those that can to do just that. We can all help them keep working and keep fighting. Every £1 is a £1 closer to a cure and that just has to be worth it.
Please find £1, £5, £10 or whatever you can afford, dig into old coat pockets and down the back of the sofa and help me to raise a little bit of cash to help Cancer Research keep saving lives and saving families.
Thank you, thank you thank you!
