Story
Us in a Bus is a small local registered charity based in Redhill. They support people who are often isolated and who find communicating with the world (and the people in it) a massive challenge. The people they support have profound and multiple learning disabilities, complex needs and sensory processing differences, requiring speciality assistance to build meaningful engagement with others.
Their services enable the people they see to access life-enriching experiences and to participate in the everyday things we take for granted such as time with friends, expressing how we are feeling and making choices for ourselves.
I'm taking part in their 2023 fundraiser in July. As part of a team of 10 I'm swimming the equivalent of a tenth of the distance from Dover to France and back again. In a lake in Reigate! So no dodging shipping containers and no freaky big waves. My calculations reckon it is 16 laps of the lake or 4.2 miles or 252 laps of a 25m pool. Luckily for the other 9 we're not doing this as a relay as I will be slow. But we do get to stop for a croissant half way through.
This is a big push for me .. I need to refine my front crawl technique as I can't swim it all breast stroke .. and I need to learn to breathe properly and pace myself.
