Story
On Sunday 13th July myself and four family members will be taking part in the London British 10K to raise money and awareness for Depression Alliance. The money you donate will help people overcome the illness, as the money raised goes towards the charity being able to keep the resources going, which helps people who are suffering with depression.
The reason we are doing this as on the 26th March 2006 our dad Eddie Herbert lost his long battle with depression. Eddie had suffered with the illness for several years and it was too big of a battle for him to overcome so he decided the only way out was to take his own life.
Eddie was the funniest, kind hearted, friendly and most family orientated man you would ever meet. Throughout his battle with depression he found life hard and lost interest in the things he use to love doing. As a family this was heartbreaking to see and we did all we could to help him. If eight years ago we knew exactly what great work depression alliance did then maybe it could of been that extra help our dad needed to get through it.
Many people believe suicide to be a selfish act, however, until you experience depression yourself or see someone you love suffer with the illness you realise why they believe it is their only way out. A quote our dad told me a few years before his death will remain with me forever and I believe it relates to depression:
"It's easy to criticise - but it's hard to understand."
Four years after we lost our dad, we also received devastating news that our Uncle and our dad's brother, Kevin Herbert had also lost his battle with depression. So as well as our dad we will also be running in memory of our uncle.
Me and my family have now decided it is time we raised awareness for depression so as many people as possible know exactly what a serious illness this is. We will be running for depression alliance and the money raised will go along way to help people overcome the illness.
"Although the world is full of suffering, it is also full of overcoming it."
