Story
As Spring arrived Headway Lancaster and Morecambe Bay….the brain injury association waved “goodbye” to our special “Angel” Molly Veale.
Molly’s husband Warren, suffered horrific injuries in a motorcycle accident many years ago. He was in hospital and rehabilitated for 8 years and for much of that time Molly made the journey from her home in Brighton to London and slept in her car in the hospital car park for 4 nights each week.
During the day she tirelessly worked on Warren’s rehab
routine but when the medics finally decided that he would never walk again or eat unaided she effectively “kidnapped” him and moved to Morecambe. Day in and day out she helped him to walk and feed himself again. Eight years ago they found Headway Lancaster
and Morecambe Bay which offers support and a social network to survivors of brain injury, their families and carers. Molly quickly became heavily involved as a volunteer and later, as a committee member.
She dedicated her time to befriending and helping out other
members and was a driving force behind the amazing Headway allotment project. She helped with day trips and outdoor pursuits weekends, organised monthly drop ins and evening socials. Molly was also nominated for the Headway Carer of the Year award.
Her ambition for Warren was infectious and soon funds were raised to enrol members at the 3-1-5 Health Club in Lancaster. Health, Strength and overall wellbeing sky-rocketed amongst the group and soon a “mini triathlon relay” had been organised which raised over £10,000.
Just as Covid hit Molly became unwell but kept her “prognosis” under wraps. She continued her work with Warren throughout lockdown and concentrated her efforts on making him as independent as possible. Sadly, Molly lost her personal battle in early March and Headway members are devastated. Warren is adjusting to life without her but she had equipped him well.
On 3rd July, 2021 (all being well) we plan to celebrate her life and all get together at The Allotment for an afternoon of music and fun with a fabulous outdoor buffet befitting our “shining star”.
Molly’s work will go on but we would welcome a little help. Covid stopped all our fundraising efforts and as life hopefully begins to open up, our members are looking forward to getting back into the Headway swing of things. Perhaps you could make a donation in Molly’s memory and we will work had to ensure that everything she did for us will never be forgotten.
