Story

Refugee Sponsorship Ibrox

Refugee Sponsorship Ibrox is a community group made up of local volunteers intending to welcome a refugee family into the area with Community Refugee Sponsorship.

What is Community Sponsorship?

Community Sponsorship is an established way to support local integration for a refugee family coming to the UK from a conflict zone or refugee camp. There are numerous groups like us across the UK and internationally who are involved in this process or ones like it. Community sponsorship is a collaboration between ordinary citizens, communities, charities, local authorities, and the Home Office.

Refugee Sponsorship Ibrox is linked with the national charity Citizens UK as our sponsor for this project.

We will be welcoming the family from their arrival in the UK, and throughout their first year we will continue to support them as they integrate into their lives here.

Our Motivations

For many of us who have felt strongly for the fate of refugees across the globe, but have not seen the level of response we would hope for, sponsorship is a very practical way to help one more family, and do so as a community, but with the back-up, advice, and collaboration of both governmental and charity bodies.

Refugee families supported in this way are additional to the quota of those the UK has already committed to relocate through government schemes. Additionally, Refugee families resettled via Community Sponsorship are eligible to apply for work and benefits as soon as they arrive.

Next Steps

At this stage we are looking to build support and solidarity for this project from the local areas of Ibrox, Govan, Cessnock and Kinning Park in Glasgow. We have an organising committee established (more members would be very welcome!), but we need support for fundraising and making community links with individuals, groups and businesses; both now and when the family arrive.

We are beginning the process of fundraising for resettlement costs (e.g., translation, first month’s rent etc), and shortly afterwards we can apply to the Local Authority for their consent, and to the Home Office for approval.[*]

Many refugees have experienced violence and trauma, as well as family separation, before being resettled, and the task of building a new life requires time, support and welcome. At the moment, 84%of the world’s refugees are sheltered by developing countries, such as Lebanon, Uganda and Sudan.  Compared to Lebanon, where refugees make up approximately 15% of the population, refugees make up just 0.25% of the UK population.
