Story
Dan, Hannah, Lucy, and Laura from your friendly acute oncology team (along with some of our nearest and dearest) will be taking on Birmingham Half Marathon in May 2023 to raise funds for our much loved and valued chemotherapy day units!
For some of us this will quite literally be a walk in the park, but for others this really is a big challenge and training is already well under way!
As the acute oncology team, we have the privilege of meeting oncology and haematology patients on a daily basis and see first hand how amazing the day units are and how hard all the nurses work to ensure that having cancer treatment runs as smoothly and as comfortably as possible.
We wanted to run to make a difference for patients receiving treatment and our goal is to raise enough to buy some heated massage chairs for each chemotherapy day unit so that patients can book into the chair and have a complementary therapy which is proven to help relax the body and move the muscles with positive patient outcomes.
As we all know, the grim statistics show that 1 in 2 people in the UK born after 1960 will be diagnosed with some form of cancer during their lifetime. The chances are we all know and love someone who is fighting this horrible disease and although we see first hand the amazing advances that are being made with treatments, the reality is that every two minutes someone in the UK is diagnosed with cancer.
The UHB charity has pledged to boost our fundraising to help us support our patients - this means that for every £1 we raise, they will give us an extra £2 for our fund!! So please give generously - this really will make a difference for oncology and haematology patients across the Midlands!
