Story
Lola, Wren, Brad & myself are planning to walk 100 miles in May. Actually, Brad plans to run it; probably because he's a teenager and doesn't want to be seen with us, but who are we to argue?! We're not planning to walk the whole distance in one go, as Lola & Wren only have little legs - but we figured 100 miles over 31 days would be a suitable challenge for an 11 and 8 year old, whilst still being achievable.
The '100 Miles in May' event felt appropriate as it will, in a small way, represent the long, arduous and often dangerous journeys that refugees undertake, in order to reach a place of safety.
Our target, as a family, is to raise £500 for the project. However, we would love for others to join us on this challenge by creating their own routes & fundraising targets. Covid-restrictions mean that we can't all walk together, but the advantage is that the event is more flexible and participants can complete the walks at times & locations that suit them.
We will track our progress using a trekking app, such as Strava or similar.
The ultimate goal of the project is to raise £10,000 by the end of 2021. With this money we aim to resettle a refugee family and help them start a new life in Devon. The fundraising has already started with tree planting on Exmoor. The '100 Miles in May' event is next, followed by teams competing in the Croyde Triathlon (4th July) and a cycle ride from Bristol to Glasgow for the start of the COP 26 Climate change conference (1st Nov), so setting off end Oct. Other events are being arranged.
Join us on our journey. See you along the way and at the finish line. Trump is gone, so 2021 is a year of love, compassion and climate action.
