Story
When I decided to sign up again for the Great North Run I already knew that I wanted to do it for Sands charity , not only am I doing something I enjoy but at the same time helping in some way to contribute to a charity that works towards reducing neonatal loss and supporting bereaved families.
The charity SANDS means so much to me on both a personal and professional level. My sister lost her baby during pregnancy , my little niece Tori , she was perfect and beautiful but just not ready for this world. I witnessed the devastating impact it had not only for my sister and her partner but for the other siblings, grandparents, aunties and friends within the family circle.
With being a midwife , a massive part of my role is to care and work with women and their families throughout pregnancy ; helping to reduce neonatal loss when possible and also supporting those families who sadly loss their baby throughout pregnancy.
Throughout my training as a midwife and when recently qualified , I was able to attend ‘free’ study days hosted by sands charity facilitied by donations to the charity. I can’t explain how invaluable these study days were for me , they gave me insight into what bereaved families were going through , their narratives of their experiences from health professional both positive and negative enabled me to see how powerful words and language can be. I was able to understand better how to support women and their families through the most difficult time of their lives.
