Story
Dad loved walking and I loved walking with him.... me and Adventure Dad! Four years ago he went out to the Lake District for a walk on his own, as he's done countless times before and this time didn't make it back to us.
Mountain Rescue help so many people in emergencies on the hills all year round and they did their best to help my Dad. Unfortunately, my Adventure Dad could not be revived and the Mountain Rescue team that day along with the Air Ambulance crew brought him down from the hills and back to us.
By chance and out of the blue I was given the opportunity to do the Yorkshire 3 Peaks with some colleagues ... just for fun ... and thought it was a golden opportunity to raise a bit of cash for this cause and the North West Air Ambulance.
My colleagues and I work in the Rail industry; between us we have engineered, designed, maintained, developed and managed on Rail projects across the UK and abroad. My Dad was also an electrical engineer specialising in Rail for over 25 years and is the reason I am working in the industry now. He brought his expertise to the Channel Tunnel, Heathrow T5 terminal, Leeds Station even Hong Kong's rail systems to name only a very few. So it seemed extremely fitting to take on this challenge with a group of Rail specialists doing the thing that Dad loved to do in his spare time and make a contribution to the people that helped.
The Yorkshire 3 Peak Challenge takes on Pen-y-ghent, Whernside and Ingleborough. It's a 24 mile long route with 5,200ft or 1,585m of ascent. The aim is to complete this in around 12 hours.
The last time I went out and did any serious walking was when we said our final goodbye to Dad four years ago. Needless to say, I am out of practice and will not find this challenge easy.
