Story
Around 2011/12 my wonderful mum, Sharon Capewell, was diagnosed with kidney cancer, whilst on holiday in Wales. She had been taken into the hospital with pneumonia, but due to a scan, that was supposed to have been cancelled, they spotted a tumor that proved to be cancerous. She was 55 at the time and still had my 15 year old sister, Georgina, at home.
Mum was a fighter though and over the next few years underwent operations to remove her kidney and treatment to fight the disease. She continued to work full time and raise Gina alone.
During this time mum had started to visit LOROS for day therapy. She had worked for LOROS some years prior and knew alot of the people there but also knew the wonderful work that they do with patients and families in Leicester, Leicestershire and Rutland. She enjoyed spending time there and meeting other people in similar positions to her. Mum had decided that when the time came she wanted to be at LOROS rather than at home.
In 2014 we had the news that the cancer had spread further around her system and further treatments comenced. However in September 2015 Mum took a turn for the worse and was back in hospital for more surgery. She spent some time then, as an inpatient at LOROS, who helped post operation, before she was able to return home for a while.
In November 2015 Mum made her last trip to LOROS, where the doctors, nurses and staff made her final days as comfortable as possible and helped us as a family to be there with her.
We could not fault the care and dedication that LOROS provided to us as a family and I wanted to be able to give something back by taking on the 2023 London Marathon, along side my husband who will also be helping to fundraise.
Please, dig deep and give what you can, to help support this amazing charity. Your help makes all the difference and enables LOROS to continue to provide care for more than 2,500 patients and their families across Leicester, Leicestershire and Rutland each year. .
