Story
Martha was diagnosed with Perthes disease at age 3. Perthes disease is a rare childhood condition that affects the hip. The blood supply to the hip bone is disrupted, causing bone cells to die, which erodes the hip and causes pain in the process. When she was diagnosed we were told she was not allowed to run, jump, use a bouncy castle, trampoline, or scooter and should only walk short distances. Anything longer than a five minute walk meant a buggy, and then as she got bigger, a wheelchair. Physical activity often left her in lots of pain.
Recently, we received some great news that the ball joint of Martha's femur has started regrowing. She has been allowed to walk longer distances and most days we can now leave the wheelchair at home. She has become a brilliant cyclist and all her cycling has helped her keep fit and keep her leg muscles in good shape. She has been very lucky as many children require surgery after a Perthes diagnosis which can be a very difficult time for them and their families.
Last year Martha raised an amazing amount of money for Steps - a charity which supports children with lower limb conditions, including Perthes. The money she raised went directly to the publishing of a much-needed Parents Guide to Perthes. This year the whole family is getting in on the action by completing a family Triathlon throughout the month of October. With Sam and Martha leading the way will see how many kilometres we can cycle, swim and run during the month (obviously due to her condition Martha will only be swimming and cycling).
Please help support our efforts by giving as much as you are able. No donation is too small. Many thanks! x
