Dear friends and supporters,
It's almost halfway through 2012 and Cycling4Gaza is in full gear again while across the Mediterranean, the Gaza Strip remains under siege for a fifth year. As we have been organising ourselves in preparation for our next cycle, we have learned that the blockade has crippled
Gaza's healthcare, leaving it in a state of emergency.
Against this background, we are more determined than ever to make a positive impact on the lives of Palestinians under occupation. This October, we will take on a
350km cycle challenge across Turkey to raise funds for Medical Aid for Palestinians (MAP), a UK-registered charity that has been working to support Palestinian communities in the West Bank, Gaza and Lebanon for over 20 years. As the blockade on the Gaza Strip continues to have severe effects on Gaza's healthcare, Cycling4Gaza has chosen to support 2 crucial health projects in the region through MAP -
1) Primary Trauma Care and community-based training - managing serious physical trauma to prevent death and disability. Through this project, we will pioneer MAP's training program that aims to maximise the local capacity of Palestinians at the heart of Gaza's community to deal with serious day to day injuries and those caused by military conflict.
2) Ensuring Safe Childbirth - providing expectant mothers in the Gaza Strip with quality safe delivery and natal care. A crucial project given the effects of the 2009 war on Gaza and the ongoing blockade which together have led to a 55% increase in newborn deaths.
In an effort to raise awareness and support for marginalised Palestinian communities outside of the Gaza Strip and West Bank, we will also support a MAP project in Lebanon's Palestinian refugee camps. MAP's Maternal and child health program runs in refugee camps in the North and South of Lebanon, and is the only community-based program in these camps that provides one-to-one counselling and home visits for expectant mothers. Through this program, we will fund the training of midwives, nurses, and social workers to provide mothers with counselling on natal healthcare and nutrition, and to provide psychosocial support to these mothers and their families in their extremely vulnerable conditions. More information about the projects we are supporting is provided on our website...
Any donation will be very much appreciated. Incidentally our target is £220,000 so your contribution would be very much appreciated.
Thank you so much for your time and please let me know if you need more details.
