Lincoln Cathedral Rope Descent · 8 August 2015
This will be the first of two charity events I will be undertaking this year, having agreed to cycle 100 miles for the Leeds Childrens Hospital Appeal. When asked the prospect of lowering myself down 98 feet seemed slightly less work than cycling 100 miles, however, taking a closer look at Lincoln Cathedral I'm not so sure!
At Nottingham's busy Ear, Nose and Throat (ENT) Hospital, Katherine Behenna (Speech Therapist) and Emlyn Jones (ENT; Lead Nurse) really care about their patients. For over 5 years they have wished that the dark, depressing courtyard space within their department could be a welcoming, reflective and sensory garden for stressed patients awaiting diagnosis and for in-patients during their recovery.
My colleague, Prof. Lorraine Young has designed a beautiful garden for them that will contain a small pavilion retreat, attractive seating in sun and shade, planting that will look lovely all year and sensory water walls and children's play areas. The ENT staff are being helped by the fantastic Nottingham University Hospitals Charity team to raise the £50,000 needed to build the garden and buy the play equipment.
Time spent in hospital can be distressing for both patients and loved ones, being able to provide an environment to help relieve some of this anxiety is extremely important, so when asked to help support this cause I jumped (rather than fell at the chance). So to help them achieve this noble goal I have decided to come down the 98 feet height of Lincoln Cathedral with nothing but a rope in order to help raise the £50,000 needed. I am also going to be joined by five brave souls from the University of Nottingham Cancer and Stem Cells and Pharmacy Departments. Over only a few years, thousands of patients will benefit from this small space, let’s help make it a better place for all.
