A few of us radiographers (and Sam!) have decided to run the Ealing Half Marathon in order to raise money and awareness for the Crohn's MAP Vaccine.
For those who are unaware, Crohn’s Disease is a debilitating and aggressive form of Inflammatory Bowel Disease. Although currently there is no acknowledged cure for Crohn’s, a team at Kings College London believe there is compelling evidence pointing to MAP as the cause of Crohn’s Disease.
MAP is proven to cause Johne’s Disease, a form of inflammatory bowel disease affecting domestic livestock, which is strikingly similar to Crohn’s Disease.
Prof. Herman-Taylor has dedicated his life to caring for people with Crohn's disease and has lead team of scientists at St. George’s, focussed on the causation of the disease and increasingly on the involvement of MAP, which he believes to be the predominant cause of Crohn’s. In 2008 he moved to King's College London where he continues to work full-time as a Visiting Professor in the gastrointestinal research group run by Dr Jeremey Sanderson.
A modern therapeutic Vaccine against MAP has been created and preliminary studies in animals have shown it to be safe and effective. Now a trial in humans is needed to take the vaccine from lab to clinic.
