Story
I have always been envious of those people who could run a marathon (I used to think I had enough trouble running a bath!) and never dreamt I could run one myself. On the inspiration of my wife Vasantha, who managed to do the couch to 5K program and joining her on the occasional runs, I decided, at 56 years old, I decided to attempt to run a marathon and if I was going to do one it would have to be The London Marathon.
If I was going to run a marathon I wanted to do it for a good cause and the obvious choice for me was for Diabetes UK. My family have a close link with Diabetes because my baby brother, Tim, died of Diabetes when he was only 3 years old and my father also died of secondary complications of this condition. I am a Physiotherapist who has worked all over the world including many developing countries and I have often come across many people with disabilities due to diabetes. It is a growing global problem.
I also wanted to add to the challenge by simultaneously broadcasting a live internet audio show whilst running the marathon. I don't think this has been done before. I will be helped by a central team who will coordinate my live voice and reflections whilst running the race alongside playing a great selection of music. The show will also feature live and pre recorded interviews with people from all walks of life who are connected with the London marathon. These may be fellow runners, organisers, professionals giving their marathon tips and even those people who are along the route. It will hopefully be a very entertaining show.
So do give to this cause and don't forget to listen to Radiodavemate live on the day from 9.30am. The link is on this page.
Thanks, Dave
