Story
As you’ve probably heard me talk about at every opportunity, this September i am going to South India!!
My role on this epic adventure will be as a team leader with Raleigh International as part of the ICS Programme. ICS is a programme funded by the government department for international development giving young people from the UK (and across the world) the opportunity to volunteer on global development projects. So basically the global version of the NCS (National Citizenship Service) programme I worked on as programme leader in the summer 2012.
As a UK team leader with ICS, I will be supporting a group of 12 volunteers from the UK and India aged 18-24 on a project in a remote rural village in south India for 12 ½ weeks! Our collective aim will be to bring about LASTING CHANGE. Tackling issues around education, health, livelihoods, strengthening civil society and protecting the environment in Southern India. Living in the heart of the community as a group, we will be working on one of the following programmes:
· Gathering data and research about sanitation facilities and healthcare in the area
· Working with Raleigh's partner NGOs to plan and build eco-sanitation toilets: providing safe and hygienic facilities for local families
· Organising health camps in partnership with local hospitals and doctors to provide expert advice and treatment in rural communities
· Working with children and young people in schools, teaching them about health and hygiene
Rural Livelihoods Programme
· Surveying the community, obtaining information about livelihoods and the local workforce
· Partnering with NGOs and other organisations to build cow sheds and vermi-compost units
· Working with women's and farmers' groups introducing the idea of using organic fertilisers and pesticides, and growing crops which have higher nutritional benefits
· Organising vetinary camps to improve the health of livestock and prevent outbreaks of disease leading to loss of income
