Story
Gareth and I will be taking part in a Resolution Run on 11th March 2018 at Thruxton cIrcuit, in order to raise money for The Stroke Association, a charity which is very close to our hearts after I suffered an ischemic stroke in April last year. Stroke is a devastating illness and a leading cause of disability which can rob people of so much of their independence and sense of self. Many people only associate strokes with the elderly but 1 in 4 people who suffer a stroke are of working age.
Receiving prompt treatment for my stroke, within two hours of it happening, allowed me to make a very good recovery. I was treated with rt-PA (a clot busting drug) which quickly restored blood flow to the affected area of my brain. I was also transferred from Frimley Park Hospital to St George’s, a specialist centre, to be considered for a thrombectomy. These treatments have the incredible potential to quickly restore blood flow to the brain minimising the damage to brain cells and I feel incredibly lucky to have been eligible to receive them. The Stroke Association help fund vital research in the development of these new techniques to help treat stroke. They also do incredible work in helping to support people whose lives have been shattered by stroke & suffer long term disability.
Gareth and I are determined to do all we can to raise money for this charity, beginning with this run. Those who know me well will be aware that running is not something I have ever done a lot of in the past (and Gareth’s running gear has been collecting dust since the kids arrived)! However, if this past year has taught me anything it is that you cannot take life for granted. I now appreciate my ability to walk and run in a way I never could have before my stroke. Any donation will be greatly appreciated. Thank you so much for the support! X
