Story
We desperately need to raise more funds to bring as many children to our small village as possible for 4 weeks respite from the ongoing effects of radiation a staggering 31 years after the Chernobyl disaster. 4 weeks of breathing our fresh air can give their immune systems a 2 year boost and gives them a higher chance of staying out of the cancer hospitals. The number of children with cancer due to radiation in Belarus is unbelievably high.
The charity has been operating in my valley for the past 20 years but I was lucky enough this year to become a host parent myself to a beautiful little girl named Nadya. Nobody was prepared for the impact this little girl and her 7 schoolfriends would have on our lives. Nadya is 9 years old but has the physical and mental development of a 5 year old. Luckily, the radiation has not had any effect on her personality. She is a happy and caring child without a family to call her own. The children we support all have special needs and most live with foster families. They have very few, if any material possessions and while we fundraise for the costs to bring them over, all other costs while they are here are met by the host families.
The cost to bring one child over is approximately £500 but the benefits for the children are huge. Breathing fresh air and eating uncontaminated food are things that we take for granted but are priceless for these children. For the full story please visit www.ccll.org.uk
Thank you in advance for your donation. As our leader says, "if lots of people give just £1, that adds up to a lot of ££££'s."
