Story
Back in 2014 Rachel was diagnosed with Cancer at the age of 25. Like many 25 year old's I thought that once the treatment was done and dusted that I would go back to my very normal life afterwards and I will continue to get on with my life. Accepting what had happened to me was very challenging and I kept burying my head in the sand about how I was feeling. After about 2/3 years of doing this with each year getting worse and worse to the point where I had a breakdown in work my manager decided we had to do something.
I had always been told about Maggie's from my doctors, nurses and friends but I was too embarrassed to go and the thought of pushing that door open to the centre was the most daunting thing I could think of. My manager who had been through cancer understood what I was feeling and offered to come to Maggie's with me one day in the afternoon. She met me there and held my hand as we went in. We met an amazing lady in the Manchester centre who sat me down in one of the small rooms, brought me a cup of tea and biscuit and just spoke to me about all my troubles and worries. I felt so silly thinking it would be the most daunting place to go into as it couldn't have been further from the truth.
Maggie's is like a home away from home, sofas, fireplaces, soft armchairs, tea and cake and lots of amazing smiling faces. They have classes from meditation, to putting on make up, to talking to a phycologist which is what I predominantly went in for. Robin at Maggie's who is the Psychologist on site was the most incredible person I could have ever met and really helped me get over the things I was feeling and helped me process the things I have gone through.
Everything that Maggie's do and supplies is completely free of charge and that is why we are raising money to help give back a small portion of what they have done to help me.
Myself (Rachel) along with Hannah will be taking our horses out throughout January to clock up 50 miles around Cheshire. Our horses walk around 3.5 mph which is approximately 15 hours to complete. My incredible Dad will also be clocking his 50 Miles up by running this throughout January too.
We will be posting updates of our rides each week so you can see our progress along with how far Ian has got to with his running.
Thank you so much for your support it really does mean so much to myself and others that need Maggie's to help get them through a really tough and challenging time.
