Story
Thanks for taking the time to visit our JustGiving page. Myself and some of the Wistaston Academy team have decide to take on this challenge of the Manchester 10k for Diabetes's UK. We chose this charity because of a pupil, Maisy, who was was diagnosed in January 2016 aged 5 & 1/2.
This is her story...….
"After weeks of acting strange, bad behaviour, drinking loads throughout the night, sleep walking, weeing lots we did a simple finger pick and her blood sugars would not even register on the blood monitor we rang 101 who advised us to go straight to A&E. When we arrived we were rushed straight into majors where they attempted to take bloods, after a while Maisy was diagnosed and given her first insulin injection which within an hour brought our little girl back into normality.
Maisy then started on multiple daily injections along with multiple finger pricks, we had to weigh out and carb count all meals. Everything Maisy ate she needed to inject for.
11months after diagnosis we were lucky enough to get funding for an insulin pump to try and help stabilise her blood sugars. Maisy now administers her insulin via her pump.
Every day is different and we never have any 2 days the same. Her blood sugars are affected by so many different things, excitement, heat, sadness, illness, sports. She acts so different depending on her blood sugars she can be high and bouncing of the walls, feeling in her words “funny” cos she is to low, this was the only way she could explain it. We can now tell by looking at Maisy's eyes that her blood sugars are low.
She’s is often woken in the night for hypo treatment as her bloods have plummets. We get up twice a night to check her blood sugars.
She can’t be a normal child sometimes, misses out on school friends get together because some parents don’t want the responsibility which I totally understand but feel so sad for her. She can’t be left on her own anywhere like dance or gym because of the responsibility on others.
Despite everything though, Maisy is such a happy girl full of fun and joy and loves nothing more than being with family and friends."
Thank you for your time and your donation.
