Story
In January this year I moved away from my island home and had to leave Port Erin Lifeboat crew where I had been a volunteer crew member for 10 years. I moved to Leicester - the most landlocked part of the UK possible but my heart still belongs in the sea! I will be running the Great North Run for the third time and continuing to support Port Erin Lifeboat crew. They answer their pagers at any time of the day or night and selflessly go to sea in order to help strangers.
About 200 people die each year in British and Irish waters, the majority of those people did not even intend to get in the water on the day they got into difficulty. RNLI lifeboats and lifeguards across Britain and Ireland rescue 24 people a day on average. Lifeboat crews are made up of volunteers, ordinary people who give up lots and lots of their time in order to make the waters around our islands safer.
