We support people to help rebuild lives after stroke.

Story

On Sunday 25 October, yes next Sunday, I am taking part in the Great South Run; ten gruelling miles of what will no doubt by wind, rain and tarmac.  For a runner this course is quite a test, for a non-runner who has failed spectacularly to keep to her training programme, largely down to a dislike for running, it represents a huge challenge.

So why am I doing it?

As many of you will know, 18 months ago my superbly charismatic grandfather, Alexander Thompson, who is shown in the picture on the left had a major stroke which left him unable to communicate and largely bed ridden.  No one wants to see their loved ones living in this way and, if faced with it, everyone wants to feel they are doing something to help. Raising money for the Stroke Association, by completing what is for me a considerable physical challenge, was how I wanted to help.

In the UK alone, an estimated 150,000 people each year have a stroke and a quarter of a million people are living with long-term disability as a result of stroke. The Stroke Association is the only UK wide charity solely concerned with combating stroke in people of all ages. It funds research into prevention, treatment and better methods of rehabilitation, educational campaigns designed to increase knowledge and understanding, and helps stroke patients and their families directly through its Rehabilitation and Support Services.

In memory of my granddad

On Monday 5 October, my granddad died. With his passing we are now able to remember and celebrate his life properly. I will be running next Sunday in memory of my granddad and just hope the grit and drive he showed throughout his life will help me conquer the blisters and pain, so I can help other families whose lives have also been affected by stroke.
