I was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis just over a year ago. I'd had ongoing shoulder and neck problems, convinced they were a lasting souvenir of Roller Derby. Last summer for the second time I lost all feeling in my arm, shoulder and back and complete use of my right hand. After much nagging I ended up in A&E to get my 'trapped nerve' looked at. Roll on a two-week holiday in Leicester Royal Infirmary and I was sent home newly diagnosed with an incurable neurological disease and a very tired body that looked more like a pin cushion from a lumber puncture, IVs and injections. Quite the bombshell, but also the answer to so many other niggles I'd always ignored.
MS ruins lives because it's so unpredictable. I feel I may have Relapsing-Remitting MS, but it doesn't have me. At present my health is pretty good, I'm active and try hard to look after myself. So this September I'll be pushing myself outside of my comfort zone, paying it forward - raising money for a charity that is there not only to support people like me living with MS but also to fund research to find a cure for this bloody annoying disease.
