Story
I am currently Haiti volunteering with Hope Health Action. I have spent the majority of my time in the Maison de Benediction, the respite care home for children with disabilities.
In 2009 the Maison de Benediction opened its door to 3 children. Now in 2018, on average around 22 children are cared for each week, with a further 15 being monitored in the community.
The Maison seeks to help the most vulnerable families
offering the love, support and acceptance that Jesus showed children with disabilities. In Haiti, children born with disabilities are isolated and frequently abandoned due to lack of long-term medical, practical and emotional support for their families. Often viewed as cursed, the reality is families often can’t afford to provide the additional care their children need.
Providing residential respite care for children, Monday to Friday, the Maison offers children play therapy, physiotherapy, medical and nutritional support, and much more.
I have been inspired by them to help raise money to fund new equipment. They have access to clean filtered water but they don't have a machine to dispense it - they currently have to lift each bottle up to get clean water. They need various other items such as a new oven and a new fridge.
I am hoping this personal challenge will help to provide the items they so desperately need. I am hoping to swim at least 3km, which will be a new achievement for me.
Thank you for your support.
