Story
In 1983, my Grandad - Fred Hucker, along with a group of friends founded the Wooden Spoon. Wooden Spoon is the children’s charity of rugby, funding life-changing projects across the UK and Ireland to support children and young people with disabilities or facing disadvantage.
In February 2019, my family said goodbye to my Grandad Fred. He was an incredible man who has helped a lot of people. Inspired by my Grandad’s legacy I decided to challenge myself physically and mentally to complete the London Marathon to raise money for the charity he helped build. A marathon is no easy feat for me, if you know me, you’ll know I’m not a fan of running unless it’s on a hockey pitch. So I’ve not made the decision lightly but I will complete it regardless of how challenging it will be for me!
Sadly, in August 2021, my family said goodbye to Jacinta Curran Hucker. Jacinta and my Grandad spent more than 30 years together and they were an amazing couple. Jacinta was an integral part of the wooden spoon and alongside my Grandad has been a huge part of the Wooden Spoon legacy. Whilst this page was initially dedicated to the London Marathon in memory of my Grandad, I will now be taking each step around the course in memory of both Fred and Jacinta Hucker.
I was originally running in 2020 but due to COVID I have moved my place to 2022! I will finish this Marathon I promise!!
