Story
Did you know Alzheimer’s disease and dementia are now the leading cause of death in England and Wales (11.4% and 10.5% of all deaths) and the 2nd leading cause of death in Scotland (9.5% of all deaths)? The latest statistics show a similar picture in Northern Ireland with 11.3% of all deaths due to Alzheimer’s and dementia.
My Dad was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease in 2017. I’ve witnessed first-hand how this condition is gradually robbing him of his memories and his ability to function. He no longer remembers my Mum – they were married for almost 50 years before she died in 2015. He now lives in a care home where he is receiving lovely care and support – it gives me great comfort that he is safe, eating well, has company and is happy.
Despite its prevalence, there is no treatment to prevent or cure Alzheimer’s disease or dementia. More research is required into this devastating condition – that’s why I’ve signed up for the Alzheimer’s Society fund-raising campaign to “Quit for a bit” in November 2022. I’m going to quit sugar AND alcohol – the double whammy called the “Ultra Quit” to raise money for vital research.
I’d be delighted if you could show your support by donating money to raise funds for Alzheimer’s Society by clicking on the link.
Thank you so much for your support.
