Story
There are currently around 850,000 people with Dementia in the UK. This is projected to rise to 1.6 million by 2040! 209,600 will develop dementia this year, that’s one every three minutes!
This November, I'm giving up all things sugar... for those of you who know me, you know how much I love a mini roll, biscuits with my tea, ice cream or a dessert! But you name it, I'm giving it up - sweet treats, chocolate, sugary drinks, desserts, cakes & pastries... anything with added or processed sugar is going. This is tougher than you think, especially when you throw in the fact that I also bake celebration cakes & treats!
Why give up sugar? Well, research shows too much sugar can be linked to type 2 diabetes and Alzheimer's Society's previous research has identified type 2 diabetes as a risk factor for Dementia.
When I did this challenge 2 years ago, I only knew my granddad to be suffering with Dementia. Today, I know a further 2 extended family members who have/are suffering with Dementia, one of which we lost this year. I've watched family members adapt their lives and become the best carers, especially to my granddad. Nothing will break your heart more than seeing those you love, change because of Dementia!
So this cause is one close to my heart, yes, but I know it will also be close to so many others across the UK. With Dementia research being underfunded and two thirds of the cost of Dementia care being paid by people with Dementia and their families, I had to get involved again.
I'd appreciate every bit of support, every contribution will make a huge difference!
*UPDATE - 21 days in to this fundraiser we sadly lost my grandad. He passed away peacefully and with this fundraiser initially in his name, I am continuing this in his memory as a form of Sadaqah Jariyah (reward and charity). It would mean the world to my family & I if you could donate in memory of my grandad (Nazir Ahmed Khan) or share this story.
