Story

Thanks for taking the time to visit our JustGiving page.

The programme for our concert Songs of the Baltic Sea was planned in 2019 and due to be performed in Autumn of 2020, and we are delighted to be able to present it now that restrictions have eased.

Choral music from the Baltic states has undergone a resurgence in recent years, and sacred choral music has flourished in particular, gathering an international following. In the late 1980s mass singing became a vehicle for resurgent national identity and non-violent protest in response to the Soviet regime. National Song Festivals, such as those in Latvia and Estonia, now feature choirs of up to 30,000 performing to audiences of 100,000.

It is difficult to overstate the importance of choral music in these cultures as an expression of freedom, unity and brotherhood, and it is a sad coincidence that our programme is being performed while war rages on so close to this region. We welcome any donations you can make to support the humanitarian relief in Ukraine.  Please give generously if you are able to do so.
