Story
Unfinished business.
Parkinson's disease is cruel. It is a progressive disease that robs you of the part of your brain that controls movement. It was first described in 1817 - over 200 years ago. And there is no cure.
I want to help raise funds for Cure Parkinsons - who do exactly as their name suggests and are carrying out research for a cure.
I started running Centurion events back in 2016 when my leg first started doing its own thing. The symptoms worsened so that I couldn't walk for a distance, let alone run. The diagnosis of Parkinson's has given me medication that reduces the symptoms to allow some forward progress (but definitely not with style). The impact of the disease in 2017 meant that I didn't finish the four 50 mile races in one year - "The 50 mile slam". The four races are the South Downs Way 50, North Downs Way 50, Wendover Woods 50 and
Chiltern Wonderland 50.
.
I know that I have completed 100 mile races since then (thanks to the drugs), but the disease is progressing. It is harder to run. My tremors are getting worse and the impact of the drugs doesn't go as far. But I want to try and get that 50 mile slam while I can, so it is a race (ha ha) between Parkinson's and September 2023 when the last race takes place.
I will be using this as an opportunity to raise awareness about the disease, and as a kick up the backside to overcome the apathy that is another symptom and get out and exercise because that has been shown to slow the progression of the disease.
Cure Parkinson's are here for the cure. Cure Parkinson’s is working with urgency to find new treatments to slow, stop and reverse Parkinson’s.Their funding and innovation has redefined the field of Parkinson’s research, enabling the world’s leading researchers to prioritise the next generation of drugs for clinical trial. Together we will conquer Parkinson’s.
