Event: Rickshaw Run India - January 2023, from 31 December 2022 to 15 January 2023
We raise awareness about menstrual hygiene to to tackle period poverty in India

Story

Summary

The Rickshaw Run is a journey across India in a rickshaw, also known as a tuk-tuk – essentially a lawnmower engine with a grand total of 7 horsepower, strapped to a three-wheel bike. The adventure opens you up to this fascinating country, with much going wrong, including breaking down almost certainly, getting lost almost certainly but encountering many incredible people along the way.

As part of this trip of a lifetime, we are raising money for two worthy charities. Cool Earth aims to tackle some of the challenges leading to the climate crisis, whilst Project Stree is working to increase awareness around women’s health in India through education and providing sanitary products. We are looking for fundraising donations towards these charities, as well as shedding light on the issues they tackle.

Details

The Adventurists are an organisation that create challenges to make life more adventurous, ‘bringing chaos into our over-sanitised lives’. They started the Rickshaw Run around 15 years ago, providing a start and finish point in India. There is no designated route, with the participants free to travel whichever way they want, staying wherever they like. The dates of our trip will be 31st December 2022 to 15th January 2023. Starting in Jaisalmer in the north of India close to the Pakistan border and finishing in Kochi near the southern tip of the country. We have two rickshaws that ride in tandem, with six people as part of the team: Olly, Will, Amy, Sybil, Lewis, and Luke. The teams are called Lime Picks and Mango Chutters, named after our favourite dips for poppadoms.

The Charities

As part of signing up for the Rickshaw Run, the organisers have selected a charity of their choice, Cool Earth, that we need to raise £1000 for. This is a great charity, offering a real solution to tackling part of the problem contributing to deforestation. Any money donated will firstly cover this, with anything over £1000 being then put to the charity of our choice, Project Stree.

Cool Earth – Fundraising Target £1000

https://www.coolearth.org/

Cool Earth aims to help fight the climate crisis by protecting rainforest through supporting the local people who live in these areas. Through this approach, deforestation can be stopped at the root cause, empowering communities and ensuring the longevity of the rainforests of the world as carbon sinks.

Project Stree

https://www.projectstree.org/

Project Stree aims to educate women and girls in Gujarat, India on menstrual hygiene and tackling stigma around menstruation. They strive to empower women to achieve their goals and ambitions without feeling limited by their cycle. Through providing education and workshops, they create a positive impact on public health by limiting the spread of preventable diseases and infections.

One thing that is important to note, the costs of this trip are entirely funded by the team members, so all of your donations go directly to the charities.
