Story
2016 marks our 70th Anniversary, and as part of this we are supporting the Royal Marsden Cancer Charity through various events and activities during the year.
We chose this charity as it is close to the heart of our West Wickham branch Negotiator, Rodney Jackson. Back in December 2015, Rodney’s 24-month-old daughter Florence, was diagnosed with a rare abdominal neuroblastoma cancer, known to affect fewer than 100 children in the UK each year.
Rodney first noticed something was wrong when Flo stopped going to the toilet. After taking her to the doctors and being told to return in two weeks, Rodney and his wife, went to A&E two days later where it all became terrifyingly real. The diagnosis was heart wrenching for the family, as it would be for any parent but the support from the Royal Marsden hospital in Sutton has been amazing.
Since the diagnosis Flo has been through a period of ongoing treatments including a heavy dose of chemotherapy followed by radiotherapy, which she has now completed (August). Although Flo is doing well the journey is still not over as Flo has been lucky to be selected for a trial of Immunotherapy, a cancer treatment developed in America to boost the body’s natural defences to fight the return of cancer. The treatment involves three weeks in the hospital then two weeks at home, repeating the same process until February 2017.
Along with Rodney and his family we are all very positive for Flo’s future and want to help others affected by Cancer. To raise as much money as possible for the charity Rodney and family have already taken part in the Marsden March raising over £10,000. In July we teamed up with Beckenham community fair, ‘Market on the Green’ holding a raffle raising £500. And we have plenty more to come. Warren Pinto from our Anerley branch is taking on a challenging 300 mile bike ride from Cork to Donegal on Wednesday 14th September. Plus, some of our bravest colleagues will be reaching to the skies for a daring skydive.
We hope you can help support this fantastic charity by
donating, however small.
Thank you
