Story
Thanks for taking the time to visit my page.
This July, I am going to Nepal for 7 weeks to help construct 3 class-rooms and teach 12-14 year-olds. Six students are going on this project, which has been organised by Bristol Volunteers for Development Abroad (charity no: 1093476)
Having read countless news stories about the humanitarian issues in developing countries, I decided to take on this project. Nepal is quite poor and suffers from inadequate infrastructure - it is failing to achieve some basic development goals, such as universal primary education.
This is important - poor education makes people more vulnerable to exploitation. Moreover, it stifles economic growth as people are stuck at subsistence levels of income, which can lead to poverty traps. These factors lead to news stories like,“at least 185 Nepalese workers died in Qatar in 2013, many from heart failure or workplace accidents” (Guardian).
All of these issues, to some extent, are affected by education and this is why I took up the BVDA scheme for summer – so I could make a difference, albeit a small one, to such an important issue.
I need to raise £700 for both the building materials and teaching resources. I am running the Bristol 10K, so please sponsor me and donate; this is a worthwhile cause and all money will go to the charity I will be working with (not my flights, etc)
Thanks again,
Pritesh
