Story
Therese (pictured below) belongs to a group called Abgendanaibyiringiro ('those who walk with hope'). This is a group of widows who meet together to give each other encouragement and support in the problems they face.
Most of the women own land but more often than not this proves to be unproductive. The perennial answer to this problem is 'ifumbire' (manure) in this case specifically from pigs which are easy to manage. A suitable pig, with the potential to have piglets of course, will cost about £30.
As an initial fund-raiser we are looking to find £450 to help the 15 widows who belong to this group. But there are many others known to us who need similar help. In the event of excess of £450 being raised, monies will go to similar projects.
Steve and I visited Shyogwe Diocese in March 2013 and one of the most significant changes I saw since my previous visit in 2007 was the increase in livestock at the various homesteads. The possession of a single cow, goat, or pig has helped to transform lives by helping to make land more productive thereby increasing crop yield.
It is our hope that across Shyogwe Diocese there will be an increasing number of people benefitting from the possession of livestock and to help this small group of widows is but a start. We hope that you might be able to help us achieve our goal.
