Homelessness can happen to anyone. It happened to me. Huggard works with a wide variety of people who have become homeless. People who experience difficulties in their lives, such as an unhappy family life, mental or physical health problems, addictions, or even a spell of unemployment can find themselves homeless.
Their services focus around a day centre that is open 365 days of the year, a 20 bed hostel with additional emergency spaces, 14 shared houses with tenant support that accommodate 53 clients. In extreme weather conditions the centre also opens the day centre at night as an additional (EOS) emergency overnight stay unit, to provide shelter for people who would otherwise be forced to sleep rough. Huggard have accommodated 40+ homeless and vulnerable people a night in the winter months.
Having been homeless with three children, I wanted to give back to the community. So I decided to set up this £2 challenge to help those who were less fortunate than me. My children and I did not have to sleep on the streets, but we were still homeless. One day as we were walking home through Cardiff town centre, my youngest son gave £5 of his birthday money to a homeless lady. At that point I realised that I had to do something. No one at no time deserves to sleep on the streets and be hungry. Huggard needs the resources to expand and improve the level of service they provide. If an eight year old can give his treasured sweetie money, surely we can try and part with £2 to end homelessness for good.
Just £2. Together we can and will end homelessness
