Streets should be safe for women. Regardless of the time of day.

We have been following the tragic case of Sarah Everard who was abducted and murdered last week off the streets of Clapham, while simply walking home from her friends house.

Women are urged regularly not to go out at night, not to walk alone. Incidents like these hit home. It reminds us that we are not considered the same as our male counterparts. We are not afforded the same human rights to go about our lives without living in fear. It is wrong that the response to violence against women is to ask women to change their behaviour. Women are not the problem.

We are aiming to Reclaim These Streets in Sarah Everard’s name but also for women who feel unsafe, for others who have gone missing and face gender based violence.

We understand that this is taking place during the Covid 19 pandemic and therefore are encouraging students to participate in a remote vigil and support the cause by placing a bright light or candle in their windows at 6PM on Saturday 13th March 2021 and donate to Aurora New Dawn, a local charity that supports survivors of domestic abuse, sexual violence and stalking, to show your support and raise awareness

We should not have to live in fear, walk with keys in our hands, pretend we’re on the phone, alter our routes, wear bright clothing and share our locations with loved ones.

Everyone has the right to feel safe and welcome at the University of Portsmouth. If you've been a victim of sexual misconduct of any kind, make an anonymous report via university's Report and Support platform.
