Story
Mary's Meals provides over 1.23 million kids in some of the poorest communities in the world with a daily meal in a place of education. Not only does this ensure these kids will be fed, but it also encourages them into the classroom, giving them an education and hope for a better life.
In Mary's Meals largest feeding programmes in Malawi and Liberia, the daily meal is a nutrient-enriched porridge and to celebrate the life-changing power of a simple meal, every year Mary's Meals celebrates World Porridge Day and this year it falls on Tuesday 10th October.
For the past few years, students at the Glasgow University Mary's Meals society have decided that one day of porridge wasn't enough so set themselves the challenge of only eating porridge, rice and beans (more Mary's Meals staples) for a week to coincide with World Porridge Day. This year we are very excited to announce that our challenge is growing to include students across the country, including the Mary's Meals societies at Edinburgh, Strathclyde and Aberdeen Universities. This is part of our #MarysMealsonCampus initiative to showcase the role that students play in the wider Mary's Meals movement, helping to ensure that all kids get to enjoy the benefits of an education, just like we can.
Not a student? Not to worry! This challenge is open to anyone - if you think you can face the task then join us! All you have to do is eat only porridge, rice and beans for the week running Monday 9th - Monday 16th October. Be sure to tell everyone you know of what you're putting yourself through and why - for all the kids receiving Mary's Meals, a bowl of porridge can be their best hope for a better life. If we can share a meal with them for a week and raise money in the process to feed even more kids, then it's worth it!
Thanks for taking the time to visit our page and if you want to support us donations are always welcome. It costs just £13.90 to feed a child for a whole year with Mary's Meals and if you help us reach our target then together we will have helped give 50 kids the meal, the education and the hope that they deserve!
