Story

Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page.

On 23rd April 2023 I will be running the London Marathon in memory of my wonderful Mum, Sheila Turner, who died in December 2022 after a short battle with Breast Cancer.

For anyone lucky enough to have known Mum, they will remember her as a vivacious, hard-working and loving Mum, friend, sister and grandmother. In November 2022 Mum began complaining of stomach flu-like symptoms that she believed to be a standard gastric flu. It slowly seemed to get worse and after some initial tests done by the GP came back inconclusive, she was sent for an ultrasound on her stomach area. On 21st November she was called into the GP who said they had discovered a number of large cancerous lesions on her liver. She was sent home and told the NHS would be in touch with next steps. The next two weeks our entire world fell apart. Mum was quickly admitted as a medical emergency into hospital where she was told she had stage 4 Her 2 Positive breast cancer that was incurable and it had spread to her liver (which was causing her stomach flu-like symptoms), her lymph nodes, spine, bones and so on. We were told it was a matter of weeks. The doctors and Mum were keen to try chemotherapy to "buy" her some more time and Mum wasn't ready to die. She did complete one session, however by this stage her liver was shutting down and her body just wasn't coping, she was just too unwell. The Doctors sat her six children down and suggested she was taken off all active care and made as comfortable as possible. Mum died peacefully, surrounded by her six children and sisters on 7th December 2022. A day none of us will ever forget.

There were only two weeks in between Mum's diagnosis and when she died. By the time she received a diagnosis, it was too late to treat her. Her 2 Positive Breast Cancer is known as the "galloping cancer" as its so aggressive. Breast Cancer Now is at the forefront of research into Breast Cancer and treatment options. No one and no family should ever have to go through what we all did. Money funds research and research ultimately is what saves lives. I would be incredibly grateful for all donations.

This one is for you, Mum xx
