Play up Pompey
UPDATE: Now that this target has been reached 2 new appeals have now been opened for the Harbour Cancer Support Centre in Gosport and the South Central Ambulance Charitable Trust . See http://www.justgiving.com/harbourcancer and http://www.justgiving.com/pompeyfans4scact This St John Ambulance appeal will, however, remain open to enable further donations in support of the great work the SJA does.
The SJA has confirmed that all the money received through this appeal will be passed to its Hampshire branch, based in Winchester.
Thanks to the hundreds of Pompey fans, and anybody else, who has donated. We reached the target in just over 24 hours - an amazing effort. Please do continue to contribute to the appeal, though, as the SJA provides a fabulous, and largely unsung service, and your donations will show them that the fans, at least, do appreciate the job they do.
One final appeal is to those who have managed to get Pompey into this mess. The various owners, former Chief Executive, Chief Finance Officer etc. Please give up your seats at the FA Cup Final on 15th May. The fans don't want you there. Please donate your tickets to some of the small, local businesses, schools and charities who are owed money as a result of your mismanagement - surely, surely surely that is the very least you can do?
STOP PRESS - Please note the following message from Michelle Dobson, Hampshire County Fundraiser for the SJA.
Dear Tom,
I have just been notified by St John Ambulance headquarters of the appeal you have set up to cover the Portsmouth Football Club debts.
I would like to take this opportunity to thank you sincerely for your support, and the support of all those who have donated to the appeal. St John Ambulance members from across Hampshire provide first aid support at Portsmouth Football Club, and I know they will very touched to hear of your generous appeal.
If you are able to post a comment to your JustGiving page I would be most grateful if you would pass on our sincere thanks to all your supporters.
Kindest regards
Michelle
Pompey fans can't get rid of Pompey's £120m debts but lets at least pay off the shameful debt to the St John Ambulance.
Pompey fans have always been proud to support their club and are renowned as the most loyal and passionate fans in the country. That doesn't mean, however, that we are proud of the way the club has been mismanaged in recent years. Indeed many of us are ashamed to be associated with some of the disgraceful antics of the club's owners and certain senior employees.
The failure to honour relatively small debts to local businesses and charities, whilst paying out obscene sums to some players for image rights, to agents for dubious services rendered, and to chief executive's who appear to have been unable to carry out the basic tasks involved in running a company, is particularly shameful.
As a Pompey fan for more than forty years I've fortunately had very little need to use the services provided by the St John Ambulance at Pompey matches. But I know they do a great job and just recently were called into action to help deal with a heart attack at Fratton Park. The multi-million pound business that is (was) Portsmouth Football Club owes the St John Ambulance £2702. This site has been set up to pay off this shameful stain on Pompey's reputation and to thank all those who work and volunteer for the SJA for the great work they do. Please contribute.
[Important note: In contributing in this way to the St John Ambulance the intention is that Pompey fans are able to fill the void left by the Club's irresponsible behaviour. It is not intended that this should give the Club's owners any excuse not to pay off the debt themselves. No Pompey fans should be expected to bail out those who have put PFC into its current desperate state.]
